There are three rules Brooke Sullivan must follow as a new nurse practitioner at a men’s maximum-security 1) Treat all prisoners with respect. 2) Never reveal any personal information. 3) Never EVER become too friendly with the inmates. But none of the staff at the prison knows Brooke has already broken the rules.

Nobody knows about her intimate connection to Shane Nelson, one of the penitentiary’s most notorious and dangerous inmates. And they certainly don’t know that Shane was Brooke’s high school sweetheart―the star quarterback who is now spending the rest of his life in prison for a series of grisly murders. Or that Brooke’s testimony was what put him there. But Shane knows. And he will never forget.
The guiltiest people aren’t always the ones behind bars…

Brooke gets a job as a nurse at a men’s penitentiary. She breaks the rules when she gets too close to her patients when she reveals details about her son. In the penitentiary is the man who nearly killed her 11 years ago. The question is, did she make a mistake all those years ago about who tried to strangle her that night as long forgotten memories start to emerge? Does she forgive and move on with her life?

Meanwhile on the home front she runs into an old friend who works at her son’s school, who wants to be more than just friends. Years ago, he was her childhood friend and confidante. Can she still trust him after all these years, give love a chance and finally have her happily ever after?

When Brooke was pregnant with her son, her parents sent her away since they did not want to deal with the embarrassment of her being a teenage mom, or so she thought. When she lost her parents in an accident, she could still not forgive them for the way they had treated her and her son. Little does she know the real reason why they didn’t want her and her son to move back to her hometown. Secrets and lies some people would rather keep buried from the ones they love and from the ones they hate.

The author shows that sometimes we think that danger is “out there” meanwhile the real danger is lurking closer than you think. The signs are there, we’re just too blind to see it. The book had me at the edge of my seat since the twists and turns were a total surprise to me. Every single character appeared to be authentic and true…until they weren’t. I don’t think anyone could predict the way the book ends. You’ll just have to read the book till the very end. A thrilling must-read by Freida McFadden.
